Rag rugs
Rag rug making is a simple traditional practice of making rugs from old clothes, blankets and bits of cloth. There are a few different techniques including weaving and sewing bits of fabric together but my preferred method is the ‘proggy’ technique, also known as ‘proddy’, ‘hooky’, ‘clippy’ and probably many other names! This is a lovely article about the history of rag rug making and it’s origins: Old and interesting - history-rag-rugs. Unlike traditional techniques, I tend to use new fabrics when creating a rug and find that fleece is the nicest to work with a it comes in a huge range of colours and the final rug is warm and wonderfully soft.
Here are some examples of the rugs which I've created for fun or commission. I'm happy to take orders for bespoke rugs so please feel free to contact me with your ideas! |
